Champions in double women in Barcelona 2009

I want to dedicate this article to the champions Simone and Paola who did a great job in the last tournament. They won the tournament, playing against very strong couples.

They started being the favorites in the draw but they had a difficult time trying to get to the final, due to the fact that they had to play against Federica Bacchetta and Giulia Spazzoli. This last two players became the world champions this summer during the World championship Consortio Vision, Rakketone, Tom Caruso, which took place last August in Rimini (Italy).

I would like to mention that the match that Federica Bacchetta and Giulia Spazzoli played against Simona Briganti and Rossella Stefanelli during the tournament that took place in Las Palmas this year on March they won with a double 6-3 to the players number 1 and 2 in the ITF ranking. In that same ranking, Simona Ceglie and Paola La Malfa are in the positions 7 and 9 respectively. But Ceglie and Paola played an extraordinary match and they won 6-4, 6-3.

During the first and second round they played against players from Catalonia as Nikki Bowwen - Carlota Zabalia and Gemma Egea ( 9 ITF ) and they won both matches.

At the end, they were at the final and played against the France players Caroline Renard, a good player , who usually plays for Reunion Island, and Laurie Cadel, a player from Montpellier. They made a good and strong couple. The match was very intense and although the Italian players lost the first set 4-6, they won the second 6-4 and finally the tie break 10-7. It was an amazing game!
